A huge thank you to all of you who put the LUST on today and to those of you who came out every Weds night to help with the open water clinics. It is a testament to our community that we were able to do these clinics, as one participant from OH noted today. Heartfelt thanks! A number of years ago they chipsealed Surface Road and we moved the TT to another temporary location. Since there is chipseal on some of this route, it is unwise to use it, however it can be tweaked. You start out on French Road, right at the Fire Station, head towards Maxwelton, right turn onto Maxwelton and turn right onto Campbell Road, turn right onto Cultus Bay, turn right onto French and cruise through the finish at the Fire Station where you started and cool down as you head towards Maxwelton. Turn around once cool and come back to Fire Station to get your time. (the original alternate had the same start place but included Bailey Rd where you would finish after coming around the corner before coming to the intersection of French with enough time to slow down before the stop).

The Tri TT course is also excellent, but also has problems-the right turn from Lone Lake Rd to Saratoga will not be monitored for an informal TT, nor will traffic be controlled at the edge of town. And right now there is fresh chip seal. I am just trying to make helpful suggestions.

You forgot Wilde. Actually, there are a number of public and private roads along the current TT course, to sizable communities at Cedar Circle, Woodside, Welcome, Witter, Meander, Fallview, and Echowood. With a high volume of commuter traffic along Langley Road at that time of day. And "Tripp's Corner", at the sharp right hand turn across from the road to sandy point. The current TT course is indeed brilliant, but it is not perfect nor is it particularly safe for TTs with chipseal on the fastest downhill by the winery. Maxwelton Road is lightly traveled throughour the day. It is worth consideration for an alternate route.

The proposed course for a Maxwelton TT crosses car traffic lanes at (in order) Coles, Ewing, Sills, Swede Hill, French, Quade, Campbell, and Midvale. That's eight intersections. I am only counting crossing a traffic lane. (I'm not counting straight across the "uninterupted bike lane" side of a tee which is okay.) Eight in 10 miles! The current TT course has *zero* in 7.5 miles. The current TT course is a brilliant course. The Tri course main lap is pretty good in this regard too.

Thanks Blake and Rosie for the Kayak offers, I'll be using Peter and Linda's as it turns out. It's nice to know there are so many options. Steve Marx from Island County Public Works is having the road swept along the tri course. He said he would try to have the whole course done by next week, cross your fingers. They were sweeping Lone Lake/Goss Lake rds. today. Regarding TT's, why not use the tri course? All right hand turns, and good preparation for the event. It's 9.5 miles +/-

If you start on Craw Rd above Coles you have a bit of a ramp to gain speed. The intersection of Cole and Craw is nearly always clear. A right hand turn to Maxwelton, a Uturn at the Dave Mackey Park parking lot and back to the foot of the hill climb to the Kirk nursery. Ten miles. A left turn to get back on Craw is a bad idea. So you stop near the myron gabelein residence at the foot of the hill. To get the ten miles you have to start on the ramp and cross the Coles/Craw intersection. TTs with U turns are not as good as a loop, but they are common. Maxwelton is lightly traveled with wide shoulders. And, so far, not chipsealed! This TT would be 5-6 minutes longer than the traditional course.

Good qualities for a TT course: Lightly trafficked. Only right hand turns. Crosses no intersections. No stop signs. No traffic lights. That way you can just ride all out without mixing it up with cars so much. The existing TT course has these qualities. That is why Brandon picked it about 12 years ago. If we pick an alternate it should be at least as good in these respects.

I signed up for the Whiskey Dick triathlon next Sunday Aug 1st. This race is an old classic in Washington that I haven't done yet. It features a 1900' climb out of the Columbia up to the Kittitas valley. It is run by Budu so my expectations are not too high for organization but it should be a good fun hard day of racing. Is anyone else interested?

Hey Brandon - The enchantments loop is about 18 to 19 miles. Working from the NW side it's about 8 miles to the top of Asgard Pass with about 5000 feet of gain, but 2000 of it in the last mile. Then it's a nice 10 mile roll down to the Snow Creek trailhead parking lot with about 7000' of loss. It's definitely a quad workout. Parties typically run this in about 4 to 5 hours, which sounds kind of slow but there's only about 10% of the trail where one can really stretch out the legs and run. The rest is steep, or rocky, or technical, or a combination thereof. We'll do it in one day of course with a self issue one-day pass. Drive over early in the morning and head home to be home that night. People can of course spend the night in Leavenworth if they want. About a dozen of us are interested in this. Hope you can make it.

Shane is a gunfighter, seeking a new life in the Jackson Hole Valley. He and Joe Starrett, homesteader, bond early in the film as they clear a stump from the farm. The stump removal is an symbol of the epic struggle they will face with Ryker, who views their "sodbusting" as obstructive to his free-ranging cattle. Shane finally realizes that a "man has to be who he is" and literally "knocks sense" into Joe, who wants to face off with Jack Wilson, the evil gun-for-hire mercenary in the Ryker camp. Joe is very strong, but is lacking in crucial martial arts skills. Shane defeats Wilson, and rides into the night as Joey, Marian and Joe Starrett's son, calls out for him to come back. Joe remains in the Valley, to raise his family straight and strong. A great movie. Beautifully filmed. Watch it for pointers before you take that stump out.

What do you get when you START a marathon at 9,200ft, run it on gravel roads along the spine of the Gravelly Range near Ennis, MT, peak at 9,600ft, then finish at 8550ft? Yes, you get rights to call it the highest road marathon in America, but what you really get is a tough as nails competitor from this island in Puget Sound (who would have thought-- a flatlander could run so well at altitude, but did last year on the Bridger Ridge Run). Just wait Ennis, MT....

I looked at the stump yesterday and I think what we need to do is dig down and expose the roots so they can be either chopped through them with an ax or cut with a chain saw, however, we’d have to really clean the dirt off them to avoid dulling the chain. We can use my utility trailer to haul it away. (Of course dynamite would be the quickest way, but the residents might get a little upset.)

Frazer, I'm in for some help with the stump. I have a chainsaw, but it looks like a breaker bar, and a pick would be more useful ( I don't have either), as the part above the ground is somewhat soft. Kurt, good gouge on the tire pressure (different Bob asked the question). I rode the patch yesterday, and today. I had less tire pressure today, and it did seem smoother. They were sweeping today also. Didn't seem too bad, but obviously the corners could be a bit tricky if any residual gravel is present.

Bob, I believe a lower tire pressure is faster on chip seal. I lower the pressure for rough roads and it feels better. High pressure causes the tire to bump along reducing contact, changing the size of the contact patch and wasting energy. Do an experiment and let us know what you find.

Aaron, Brian, and Peter: thanks for getting on the chip seal issue. This will make a big difference. On a related subject, there is a large stump under the trees at Goss Lake where the swim transition takes place We have permission from Parks and Rec, who now manage the Goss Lake Park, to remove it. It's taking up valuable space, so I'd like to get a crew together this weekend and see if we can take it out and level the ground around it. I don't know if it’s possible, but I'd like to give it a shot. Let me know if you want to put your back into the project this weekend – maybe Sunday before the 4pm swim?

I contacted the assistant director of Public Works for Island County a couple of weeks ago as I could see this coming, and he said that there was a very high likelihood of having it swept by their machine. He didn't guarantee it, but if there's any chance of it happening he'll make it happen. He had the pilings installed last year at Goss Lake a few days after I complained to him about someone parking their truck on the beach. He also thought that there was a chance that the whole course could be swept. I know chip seal sucks, but if they'll sweep the road it won't be too bad.

SWLL is home safe and sound after a very exciting experience at State. We won our first game on Saturday against LaCamas 4-2 with the highlight for our family being Will hitting his first homerun of his baseball career to break a 2-2 in the 4th inning!! Our team got one more run in the 5th and Will came in to close out the game in the 6th after Charlie Patterson pitched a fabulous game. Will also had a webgem of a catch in the 5th as did his buddy Connor to get the 1st out in the 6th inning. Sunday...Next up West Seattle. 1pm start...peak heat of the day. We jumped out to a 5-1 lead behind a sweet 2 run HR by Parker Buchanan but we had a rough bottom of the 3rd and lost 9-6. We had opportunities to score more but it didn't happen. Last game was Monday against Bellevue. Will was starting pitcher. Gave up 2 runs in the 1st after scoring himself in the 1st. Gave up 2 more runs in the 3rd and we were able to come back and get 2 of our own...4-3. Pitching change in the 4th with buddy Connor coming in. He gave up a 2 run HR and we couldn't capitalize on a bases loaded opportunity in the 5th to tie it up. Thems the breaks. Beautiful weather, a bit too intense in the sun but the fields were great and the kids had a lot of fun despite the losses. Nice to know we can play at the State level and do well. Hope we can win a couple more next year! Thanks for asking!

What a weekend of racing. It was great to see all the DSR people at Chelan for my third year in a row at this race. Sunny and warm is sooo nice. The day started with clear skies and a good breeze setting up a chaotic chop in this big blue lake. Holmes Harbor practice really helped. The bike started with a bit of headwind that was a tailwind after the turn around. The run is exposed to the sun but along the lake. The Olympic race finishes just before the heat starts but the half iron racers get full sun and heat exposure for the duration of the run. After the finish a dip in the lake and lounging in the shade is a perfect ending to the event. Good racing, good weather and good people, couldn't ask for more.

OK Frank. Just got home, so here's the age group placements: Olympic: Kurt - 1, Gretchen - 12. 1/2 Iron: Kristan - 7 (lots of competition in that group!), Molly - 6 (for her first 1/2 ever and she was all smiles the whole way!), Brian cracked the top 10 on his first 1/2 Iron and I won my age group. It was a fun weekend and just a crazy scene. Well organized. And a nice showing from DSR. Everybody else please add your perspectives when you get home tonight.

Just a few clues: Ron and Kurt AG 1! (no surprise there). Gretchen rocked her race... and what awesome results for two first time 1/2 IMs!

Cryptic Ron. I like a good puzzle now and then. Hmm, it's not Fibonacci, a zip code or phone number. Three numbers are prime, three are factors of 2... The pyramid is the most strength to material efficient form and has three sides so does the Holy Trinity. I imagine a deltoid is kind of three-sided and used for swimming maybe. Nirvana had three members, a tricycle has three wheels, but nobody rode one of those... and then. of course, there's Winkin, Blinkin and Nod. I give up. Methinks the results suggest that everybody kicked ass and averaged 6.16th place. True representation from the west side! Well done DSRs.

Quick Chelan Man report: Great event. There were like 6 races going on simultaneously. Crazy. Waves on the swim, mountains on the bike and heat on the run. Wow. DSR age group placements: 1, 7, 6, 10, 1, 12. Nice going everyone!
